Free, easy to use app for teaching and learning English.

Whether you are a teacher of English or an individual learner, this app provides lessons to improve your reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. Aligned with the English curriculum of Nicaragua but accessible for learners across the world, users choose from a variety of topics to access lesson plans and audio files developed to support English language development. Reaching for English activities are fun, engaging ways to get your students talking and listening in English.

Developed by a team of university TESOL/TEFL professors, the activities provided are based on best practices for interactive language teaching and learning; you can actually develop as a language teacher by exploring and using the app with your students!

How can teachers use the app? If you want your students to use English in your classroom, choose from one of the “Teacher Classroom” topics (1-30). Read the directions, and tell your students to download the materials on their smart phones from the “Student Classroom” files.

In class, use the lesson plan to prepare your students, and then carry out the activity with students using their phones. If you want your students to practice listening outside of class, choose from one of the “Teacher Independent” topics (1-30). Read the directions, and use the lesson plan to prepare your students. Then, tell your students to download the listening material (mp3s) on their smart phones from the “Student Independent” files.

They should listen outside of class, and find the answer to the question they are asked. If students do not have access to smart phones, you can simply recreate the materials on a chalkboard or piece of paper.
We hope as you explore the activity types you will notice how students are prepared with vocabulary, functional language, and pronunciation.

Be sure to note the objectives that are identified for each activity, and use the assessment suggestions to check your students’ understanding. Reaching for English is free, effective professional development for any teacher who has occasional access to the internet. Come learn about teaching English with us.
